Peter Menzel’s, Material World, is a pictorial study of families from countries around the world. Menzel photographed families from Mongolia, Mali, Thailand, Kuwait, Iceland and many others in front of their homes with all their material possessions surrounding them. The photographs provide an incredible insight into how people around the world live and what they see as the most important materials in their lives. In 6th grade Global Studies, we will learn about these families and their countries including their food, geography, weather, traditions, shelter, and for some of them, their struggle for survival. We will evaluate differences and similarities between the countries and families through observations and statistics. Also, we will compare our Lincolnwood students’ lives with those of the people photographed. Students will learn that their lives in Lincolnwood are very different from the way most people around the world live.
