Bugs, Bugs, Bugs
This week we learned all about insects. We talked about how all insects have 6 legs, 3 body parts - head, thorax, and abdomen, and some have wings. We started the week with the book The Very Hungry Caterpillar by Eric Carle. We talked about the life cycle of the butterfly. The children also practiced retelling the story with pictures, flannel pieces and a puppet. We even welcomed 6 new friends to our class - real caterpillars! Over the next few weeks we will observe how they change and grow into butterflies. We also listened to the story Waiting for Wings by Lois Elhert and The Grouchy Ladybug by Eric Carle. The children enjoyed playing with our pretend insects all week in both the block area and the sand table.
In our reading lessons this week, we talked about the beginning sounds in words. We also made personal connections to a story about birthdays. We realized we know how the character was feeling because we have all had birthdays like her. In our math lessons, we worked on making some picture graphs. In our writing lessons we practiced writing the letters R and K. We also learned how to make the number 6.
Next week we will be exploring different science concepts, such as sink and float, magnets and friction. On Friday we will be having a real scientist visit our class to teach us about chemistry.
We have begun practicing for our upcoming Spring Sing on May 10th. The children are very excited to have you come to school and see them perform. We hope you will all be able to make it! The morning show will be at 10:15 and the afternoon show will be at 1:45.
