Rhyme Time

This week was all about rhyming.  We listened for rhymes in the books Ten Cats Have Hats by Jean Marzollo, Is Your Mama a Llama? By Deborah Guarino, Frog on a Log by Kes Gray, and Five Little Monkeys Jumping on the Bed.  We also made rhymes by matching picture cards and singing the song ‘Down By The Bay’.  Rhyming is an important pre-reading skill. You can practice this at home by giving your child a word and having him/her give you a rhyme.  You can also look for rhymes in the books you read at home. Next week we will keep on rhyming by reading and acting out some popular nursery rhymes.

In our reading lessons this week, we talked about rhyming words and the letters in our names.  The children had to find and dot the first letter of their name. They also practiced writing letters in shaving cream, and trays of rice and cornmeal.   In our math lessons, we continued talking about measurement. We talked about capacity while we filled different sized containers in the water table. We also put things in order from shortest to tallest.  In our writing lessons we practiced writing the letters S and J. We also worked on writing the number 5.

I look forward to meeting with you for parent-teacher conferences.  If you need to change your time, please let me know.
