Pumpkins

This week we talked all about pumpkins.  We learned the pumpkin life cycle - seed, sprout, vine, flower and pumpkin.  We enjoyed a nonfiction book titled Seed, Sprout, Pumpkin, Pie.  We did an investigation of a real pumpkin.  We talked about the size, shape and color. We then cut it open to see what was inside.  The children helped scoop out the seeds and pulp. We then carved a face and made a jack-o'lantern.  We also read the books Big Pumpkin by Erica Silverman and Pete the Cat Five Little Pumpkins by James Dean.  For our STEM lesson this week, Mr. Edman made us some pumpkin catapults.  We tested different types to see which would send our pumpkin pom pom the highest and furthest.  On Friday we made some yummy pumpkin muffins for snack. I sent the recipe home if you would like to try them for yourself.

In our writing lessons the children practiced using tiny scribbles to color in pink and brown objects.  In our math lessons we continued to work on the concept of position. We worked on right and left, forward and back, and first and last.   In our reading lessons we talked about words that rhyme. We also worked on writing our name and beginning, middle and end.

On Friday we had our October PBIS celebration.  The children turned in 5 tickets to play pumpkin bean bag toss.  They have been doing a great job earning lots of tickets for good behavior.

Next week we will talk about fall.  We will be looking for the changes that are happening in this season.  Thanks for all the leaves you sent in already. If you have not had a chance yet, we would love more next week.  Don’t forget on Friday we will be taking our field trip to the Emily Oaks Nature Center. We will take a walk to look for more signs of fall.  All activities will take place outside. Please make sure your child is dressed for the weather.
