Hibernation

Welcome back!  I hope everyone had a wonderful Thanksgiving and enjoyed the extra day off.  The children were all very happy to see each other again. We loved hearing all their stories.

This week we learned all about hibernation.  We talked about what some animals do to get ready for the cold winter months ahead.  We enjoyed the books Bear Snores On by Karma Wilson, Time to Sleep by Denise Fleming, and Hibernation Station by Michelle Meadows.  We talked about which animals hibernate - bears, snakes, bats, turtles, chipmunks and even ladybugs.  We had a cave set up in our class so the children could hibernate as well. We had a lot of fun wearing our pajamas to school on Friday!  We made a special hibernation snack out of graham crackers, frosting and a teddy graham.

Our writing lessons this week focused on writing the letter F and drawing a square.  In our reading lessons this week we talked about the main character and practiced retelling a story using props and puppets.  We also discussed the way to follow the words in a book from left to right. In our math lesson we talked about the numbers 1-3.  We counted and built sets of objects to represent these numbers.

Next week we will be talking about fairy tales.  We will be reading some classic tales and some newer versions.  On Friday, we will be participating in the Todd Hall Snowman Shuffle.  We ask that each child bring in at least one item to donate to the district canned food drive for the Niles Township Food Pantry.  It is a great way to teach the children how we can give back to others and get some exercise.
