Fairy Tales
This week we explored the genre of fairy tales. We started the week talking about the story elements that are present in this type of story, such as make-believe story, the animals act like people, there is a hero and a villain, and often ends with the words ‘and they lived happily ever after.’ We read many fairy tales, including Cinderella, The Three Little Pigs, and Little Red Riding Hood. We also enjoyed the story There Was an Old Dragon Who Swallowed a Knight. The children acted out the various stories with our class puppets and by making crowns and magic wands. Mrs. Gussis taught us about the artist Dale Chiluly. He creates magical looking art out of glass. We watched an amazing video about how he heats up the sand and blows the glass into his sculpture pieces. The children then made their own art pieces with plastic cups and tissue paper that we will use to create a class sculpture.
The theme for the next two weeks will be the gingerbread man. We will compare many different versions of this classic tale.
Curriculum Lessons and Topics:
Math: This week we introduced the concept of sorting. We practiced making groups of objects that were alike. We practiced this by sorting our class toys into the correct buckets.
Handwriting/Reading: We completed the letter page for T this week and talked about words that begin with this sound like, turtle, taco and two.
STEM: Mr. Edman used the fairy tale The Three Billy Goats Gruff for his lesson this week. The children were challenged to create a boat to help the goats get across the river. They used materials like tin foil, sticks and bricks. They were able to build a boat and then test it in the water to see if it would float.
