At the Beach!

We had a great week exploring the ocean and the beach.  On Monday we enjoyed the book There Was an Old Mermaid Who Swallowed a Shark by Lucille Colandro.  The children used glue and a lot of glitter to create some sparkling mermaids.  On Tuesday we read Penguin on Vacation by Salina Yoon.  The children painted some surfboards for us to use on beach day.  On Wednesday we learned some interesting facts about seahorses with the book Seahorse: The Shyest Fish in the Sea by Christine Butterworth.  We learned that the male seahorse holds the eggs and a baby seahorse is only as big as an eyelash.  We also talked about how they change color to hide from other sea animals. On Thursday we read The Rainbow Fish by Marcus Pfister.  The children then used tissue paper and tin foil to make some suncatcher fish. Beach Day was a blast on Friday!  Thanks for sending in all the fun beach items to help make the day more special. We surfed, played limbo dipped our toes in the water and even made a fun ocean snack.  Cowabunga!

In our reading lessons we discussed the difference between a letter, a word and sentence.  We also began talking about word families. In our math lessons we worked on counting and recognizing the numbers 6-10.  The children counted bears into boats and learned a new counting song. In our writing lessons we worked on making the number 4 and the letter C.

Thank you for sending in so many crayons, markers and colored pencils for the Todd Hall Service Learning Project to help Families Helping Families Chicagoland!  Our class has already collected more than 200 items. We will accept donations until Tuesday. I hope you will be able to join us for the family night to pack up the activity bags.

Next week we will talk about friendship and Valentine’s Day.  On Thursday, February 14th we will be having our Valentine class party.
