Five 7th-grade students from Lincoln Hall Middle School recently participated in the Regional Science and Engineering Fair at Niles North High School. Their projects were amongst over 300 entries from across the region. We are thrilled to announce that all of the 7th graders qualified to advance to the State Science and Engineering Fair at Southern Illinois University in Carbondale at the end of April.
Three of the students were awarded the Best in Category in Zoology for their outstanding project. Throughout their work, these students demonstrated creativity, perseverance, and excellent scientific thinking. They collected and analyzed data, wrote scientific papers, and were judged by panels of scientists.
Their projects covered a range of scientific topics such as belt-driven and gear-driven car transmissions, spherification of liquids in food science, acidity and pH, polymers, metabolism, and water fleas called Daphnia Magna. The students utilized skills learned in their science class, including using professional microscopes donated by Oakton Community College, applying math calculations to analyze their data, and even creating a Lego car from scratch with different transmissions.
We are incredibly proud of these students for their hard work, accomplishments, and enthusiasm for science. Their projects serve as a testament to their dedication to scientific exploration and we look forward to seeing them continue to excel in the future.
