Story Walk and STEM: First Graders Share Moments That Matter at Board of Education Meeting

At the regular Board of Education meeting on November 7, Todd Hall principal Chris Harmon and the first grade team highlighted the school’s annual Story Walk Night – a celebration of reading literacy and STEM.

Librarian Kelly Tokarski chose “The Scarecrow” by Beth Ferry for this year’s featured read; a story about friendship that can weather seasons (or can it?).

The Story Walk event takes place in the Todd Hall courtyard in early fall, the perfect setting for diving into a good book. Families walk around the space, reading pages from the story, then meet up in Todd Hall’s library and MPR for a series of related activities organized by STEM teacher Chris Edman.

Seven first graders in attendance at the Board meeting talked about their favorite moments from the event, which included building hoop gliders – a nod to the flying crow, a character in the book – and making neon designs on paper plates with UV crayons and markers.
