Pete the Cat Unit
Last week, we immersed ourselves into managing emotions and problem solving by shifting our perspective, all thanks to our 'Pete the Cat' unit. From witnessing Pete's comical misadventures like losing his four groovy buttons to stepping into various objects that transformed his shoe colors, the children learned invaluable lessons on conquering inconveniences and disappointments with positivity.
We began our journey of the Learning Without Tears curriculum with an essential lesson on greeting etiquette – a skill that will serve our students well throughout their lives. Through the catchy tune of 'The Hello Song,' we not only discovered the importance of a handshake with our right hand, but also the significance of maintaining eye contact when meeting and conversing with others.
We also extended our ‘Pete the Cat’ unit through STEM activities. Last week's challenge ignited creativity and problem-solving as we tasked our students with constructing towering masterpieces. Armed with oversized buttons and playdough, they embarked on a quest to determine who could craft the tallest tower. We introduced measuring tape into the equation to allow the students to track their achievements by counting and comparing how many inches their towers reached.
Despite our four-day week, we still had time to learn and review shapes, which was complemented by an artistic endeavor inspired by 'Pete the Cat.' The challenge? Creating artwork using different shapes to depict various body parts of our beloved feline friend. This exercise not only allowed the students to show off their artistic talents but also reinforced the importance of attentive listening and following directions, skills that are instrumental in their educational journey.
